Traditionally dated medieval period (exact era debated)
Several Tamil poets across different eras carried the name Avvaiyar; the one credited with the Aathichudi is generally considered distinct from - and later than - the Sangam-era Avvaiyar. Her hallmark is delivering deep moral guidance in the simplest possible language, a style that has made her work endure as foundational Tamil teaching material.
About this work
The Aathichudi is a collection of 109 single-line maxims, traditionally among the very first Tamil texts taught to children. Its lines run in the order of the Tamil alphabet, each beginning with the next letter. Despite its simple wording, it packs deep ethical guidance into a form generations have memorized as their first lessons in Tamil.
